After watching the sensational Ferrell v. Smith drum-off on the Tonight Show (video below), I learned three things:
- The Red Hot Chili Peppers are looking to release a new album at the end of the Summer;
- Will Ferrell is the Ultimate Pitchman; and,
- Yes, Will and Chad are twins that were separated at birth!
How Will Ferrell is the CMO-in-Chief
Will Ferrell’s Burgundy stint pitching Dodge proved that one man has the talent to significantly boost sales without owning a ‘C-level’ title. His humor of softening social edges with preposterous drama draws large audiences and customer traffic. Madison Avenue and corporate marketers need to take note: Will Ferrell is becoming, if he’s not already, the pitchman of the 21st century. His level of success in marketing others’ goods is surprising to many, but shouldn’t be. If one were to deconstruct Ferrell’s marketing methodology, we’d see that he employs techniques that don’t silo branding efforts to just traditional channels or just digital venues. He engages both. Ferrell leverages his star-powered following with PR stunts on time-honored media, and uses a network of Internet touch-points for distributing the creative content. And he rocks it!
The Momentous Tonight Show Will Ferrell versus Chad Smith Drum-Off!
The amount of YouTube views across the last hour (09:00-10:00am, May 23, 2014) for the Ferrell-Smith drum-off reached over 2 million; equivalent to 50% of the average Tonight Show viewership. With the current YouTube visitor velocity this video is having, it could easily reach 10M views by the end of the weekend. For Will, this guest appearance was just another coup de maître for the benefit of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimmy Fallon …and Kiss (now, was that a product placement?)
